Psychometry series
The question of how and why a place could become susceptible to haunting is fascinating. One of the most intriguing theories I discovered dealt with the psychic phenomenon of psychometry. Psychometry is the ability to perceive the history of a person, object, or place through physical contact. The belief that the energy from events and people embeds itself into its physical surroundings, creating a history and memory, is the essential component in psychometry. Although psychometry implies accuracy through extra-sensory perception, the idea that this memory behaves more like human memory is also intriguing and important within the process and work.
Each painting focuses on a historic home or building taken out of New England. Some buildings reflect the eeriness lying within and other times it’s completely unassuming and serene. Historical images, scenes from movies, and imagery from my personal life are suspended within the dreamlike atmosphere. Some images are directly related to each location while others are irrelevant and hazy. Through the process of pouring layers of resin, some translucent and others opaque, psychometry and memory emerge.
Filmy images converge with haunted buildings cultivating elusiveness and mystery. Translucent layers lure the viewer into the soul and memory of the building; from this depth, history and memories emerge and seep out. Artificial memories arise and stories begin to manifest.
